About Troy University

Troy University is a public university in Troy, Alabama and it was founded in 1887, on February 26, as Troy Normal School.


Alabama Legislature established Troy Normal School, in order to train teachers for Alabama's schools.


The school offered extension courses for teachers and gave teaching certificates until 1929. In the same year, the college was moved to its present site, and it continued to grow in the renowned university that is today.


The campus of Troy University consists in 35 buildings spread on 460 acres. The university has several branches in many other U.S. states and countries.


Students under the age of 19 must live on campus, unless their families live in Troy. They can participate in the many student organizations or Greek groups.


Troy University offers 13 degree programs, including arts, computer science and public administration, as well as distance learning courses, being categorized as a medium-sized university

Travel Tips

Pioneer Museum of Alabama. The museum holds over 15 000 artifacts, old farm equipment and displays of furnishings dating from 1800. Visitors can also admire items from the Civil War, and a room that presents Troy in the 1900's. There are 17 buildings outside the museum, including a one-room school and a store from 1921. Tourists can find the museum at 248 Highway 231, N Troy.


Pike County Lake. It is a 45 acre lake, situated at a distance of 5 miles from the south part of Troy. There are picnic areas established on the lake's surroundings. Swimming is not allowed and people who wish to fish in the lake, have to own a fishing license or permit.


Troy Recreational Center. The center provides many activities for visitors, including swimming lessons, water aerobics and gymnastics. Adults will pay $4 to enter the facility, and for the children, the entering fee is $3. Senior citizens will not pay more than $1. The pool is open from Monday to Friday, between 6 am and 8 am, and from 12 noon to 7 pm. On weekends, the program is different: Saturday between 10 am to 6 pm and Sunday from 2 pm to 6 pm. The center is located at 601 Enzor Road.

Facts & Short history of Troy

Troy is a city in Pike County, Alabama. It 1901, the city burned down and it was necessary to be built from scratch. It was originally an Indian hunting ground, known as Deer Stand Hill and in 1838 it became known as Troy. A first establishment was set at Louisville that was later moved to Monticello and finally, in 1839, located in Troy.


In the year 2000, Troy had a culturally diverse population of 13,935 inhabitants. The climate of the city is hot during summer and cold during winter. The hottest month is July, with temperatures around 90°F and the coldest time is in January, when the temperatures are about 36°F. The wettest time of the year is in March.
